Overview
CoinGecko is the largest independent cryptocurrency data aggregator. Its public API v3 exposes market data for 10,000+ coins: live prices, market caps, volume, price history, exchange data, and the trending coins list. No API key is required for basic use, which makes it a favorite for wallets, trackers, and dashboards.

Authentication
No key needed for the public endpoints. If you hit rate limits, register for a free demo API key at the CoinGecko developer portal to get higher limits (paid tiers exist for production scale).
Rate Limits & Notes
- Public (keyless) access is rate-limited — roughly a handful of calls per minute; heavy use triggers
429. - A free demo key raises the limit significantly; check the pricing page for current numbers.
- IDs are stable and lowercase (e.g.
bitcoin,ethereum) — use/coins/listto look them up. - Data is aggregated from many exchanges; prices are volume-weighted averages, not a single exchange spot.
