Dicebear Avatars

Overview

DiceBear generates cute, consistent avatars from a seed string — dozens of styles (avataaars, bottts, identicon, pixel-art, lorelei…) as SVG or PNG. Keyless and free, it’s the go-to for placeholder avatars, user defaults, and fun profile pictures.

⚠️ Breaking change (verified 2026-08): the legacy path avatars.dicebear.com/api/... returns HTTP 410 Gone — the API moved to https://api.dicebear.com/7.x/... (verified live). Use the new host and versioned path.

None — keyless.

Rate Limits & Notes

• Free; the API is a simple image service — hotlink-friendly (intended for <img> tags).
• seed determines the avatar — same seed, same avatar (deterministic).
• Styles: avataaars, bottts, identicon, pixel-art, lorelei, adventurer, thumbs, and more (see the docs).
• Old URLs (/api/{style}/{seed}.svg) return 410 — migrate to /7.x/{style}/svg?seed=.

FAQ

Is DiceBear free? Yes — free and keyless.

Why do old URLs return 410? The API moved to a versioned host (api.dicebear.com/7.x/...) — the legacy path is gone.

Can I use it for user avatars? Yes — deterministic seeds mean the same user always gets the same avatar.
