Overview

ip-api.com resolves IP addresses to location data — country, region, city, coordinates, timezone, ISP, and ASN — with a simple keyless GET. One of the most popular free IP-geolocation APIs (used by countless tutorials).

Note: the free tier is HTTP-only (verified live — http://ip-api.com/json/8.8.8.8 works); HTTPS and higher limits require a paid key.

Authentication

• Free tier: no key (HTTP only, 45 requests/minute per IP).
• Paid tier: HTTPS, higher limits, and no rate limit on requests per minute.

Rate Limits & Notes

• Free: 45 requests/minute from one IP — enough for light use; cache aggressively.
• Fields include status, countryCode, region, city, lat/lon, timezone, isp, as, org.
• Batch endpoint handles up to 100 IPs per call (still 45/min).
• The fields parameter trims the response: ?fields=country,city,lat,lon.

FAQ

Is ip-api free? Yes — free tier (HTTP only, 45 req/min); HTTPS needs a paid key.

Why HTTP only? The free tier doesn’t include HTTPS — fine for public geolocation, just don’t send secrets.

How many IPs per batch? Up to 100 per request.
